No, we’re not talking about your next-door neighbor’s mom. Hot Stepmom is fresh out of the local indie music scene and are leaving an impact on their community. You’ve got Anna Norris on vocals & guitar, Cameron McLennan, guitar, Ben Babcock on drums and Jarin Szewczyk on bass.

In the earliest days of Hot Stepmom, while their sound was still beginning to form, they were leaning more towards punk rock. Today, their sound continues to create their own unique music style. “Hive” dropped in January this year and was their first indie rock song that shifted their music into a new era.

On top of being musicians, they are also students. It can be difficult managing time between being a college student and also pursing music. Benjamin is majoring in music studies while attending Pierce College so he finds it easier to focus on music.

“I really struggle with my priorities, too…it’s often hard to, like, choose. Should I work on this assignment or should I, you know, rehearse with the band?”

On the other hand, Anna is majoring in stem, which creates a feeling of separation between school and creating music.

“I feel like it’s easier for me like that because it feels like very separate and it feels easy to block out time for different things”

Ultimately, if students are interested in pursuing music it depends on their own individual circumstance and what will work best for them.
When asked for advice for students who are interested in starting a band, they encouraged students to start a band with people who you are friends with, but also friends who are motivated musicians. They also recommended finding people who want to create a similar style of music. Don’t be afraid to experiment with music style or take inspiration from Idols.
