Audiences applauded the new Pierce College production “Almost, Maine” featured at the Black Box Theatre on campus at 7pm on Nov. 11 12, 18, and 19.
In the town of Almost is an array of interesting characters all living their lives while unexpectedly finding love in this comedic play.
Playwright John Cariani interlaced the emotions entitled in the quest for love seamlessly, and added surprises that undoubtedly sent the audience’s emotions every which way. From the man who found out his love was to be married the next day to the power of a misspelled tattoo; spectators continued to be pleasantly surprised as the night carried on.
This was no light task. A total of 8 actors portrayed around 19 roles in this 9-play love chronicle. Portraying different characters in a matter of half an hour most definitely seems like a difficult task to ask of student performers, but most actors embraced the new role with such vigor and credible personas making it quiet enjoyable to watch.
The key to the ‘mini plays’ was in the actor’s ability to find compassion within the story’s sadness and comedy. Unfortunately, some scenes came across as excessively far-fetch as well as motorized, but these few moments did not overshadow the character’s likeable nature.
Actors Anton Arganoza, Addison Kelly, Chelsea Baker, Lawrence Yoshikawa, Lakesha Egardo, Hayley Nichols, Kaylie Rainer, and James Duetto Han enveloped their characters in slightly foolish behavior that drew laughter from audience members but still did not overpower Cariani’s keen ear for how everyday people talk.
“Almost Maine” captivates the hearts of viewers despite the few negligible errors. This comedic love story is well worth the $2 admission for students and provides a safe haven for onlooker’s emotions to roam free with the community of Almost.
