The fourth installment in the “Underworld” franchise, “Underworld Awakening,” delivers with a fresh new spin on an otherwise scattered series.
Should you be new to the Underworld series, the film may leave you a little confused, and quite frankly, left behind. The film’s fast pace would leave viewers in awe and out of breath. Nonstop action from beginning to end, “Underworld Awakening” delivers for both an action lover and horror fan alike.
Underworld opens with a short recap of the previous three installments, and cuts right to the chase with Selene (Kate Beckinsale) brutally killing some men; Yes men, not lycans.
The humans have entered the war between vampires and lycans, as they attempt to purge both species from the Earth.
She races to meet her love, Michael (Scott Speedman) so they can escape the purge and live happily ever after. The humans stop them, placing both of them in cryo (freezing cell) only to awaken 12 years later, after the purge.
Thinking she is seeing through Michael’s eyes, Selene traces an unknown entity to a sewer, where she encounters another vampire, David (Theo James) as he hunts down some lycans in hiding.
There, she learns that she wasn’t following Michael, but their lab born daughter, Eve.
Selene returns to his coven, where they are promptly attacked again, not by humans, but by a pack of lycans.
This includes a “super lycan”, more than twice the size of any other lycan in existence. With the rest of the coven defenders dead, Selene is left to fight the monstrosity by her lonesome, which she quickly looses.
She is knocked out underneath a stack of rubble, awakening to find Eve taken by the lycans, given to them by the cowardly coven leader.
David, the coven leader’s son, dies from his lycan inflicted injuries. Before leaving to rescue her daughter, Selene revives David using her blood, made powerful by Alexander Corvinus (from Underworld: Evolution).
Selene seeks the help of an investigator, who allows her access to files showing evidence that the lab she escaped from might be run completely by lycans.
Together, the three try to take down the lab and rescue both Eve and Michael.
“Underworld Awakening” has beautiful visuals, including a lovely color palette made up of blue, grey, and black.
You will hardly find a warm color in this movie, unless of course it’s fire. There are plenty of death defying stunts, including jumping off buildings, several times.
Though the movie delivers as a nice sequel to the series, the original still takes the cake as the best in the franchise. The ending is very abrupt, and leaves you wanting more, which can be either a good or bad thing.
