Embrace your voice
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month
“Take Back the Night” is a nationwide walk that brings women together in an organized protest about sexual assault, From its start in 1976, it has gained support across America. Other events have also raised awareness about violence against women. The organization RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation’s largest anti-sexual harassment organization, has numerous cases that prove that sexual violence needs to be taken seriously.
In the late 1980s, the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault decided the national sexual assault awareness week should be in April. Since then, many supporters began coordinating activities and events throughout April, promoting the idea of a national recognition month for sexual violence and prevention activities. Sexual assault awareness month was first observed nationally in April 2001.
In 2009, President Obama declared April as sexual assault awareness month.
National Sexual Violence Resource Center chose this year’s theme as “Embrace Your Voice,” which is developed from the previous year’s, “Engaging New Voices.” Teal ribbons are used as the symbol for sexual assault awareness and prevention. The slogan and the ribbon symbolize every single voice in this sexual assault story matters. The theme’s idea is to highlight that how individuals bond and connect to use their voices to have a true impact on this social blight.
The Washington Coalition Sexual Assault Program conducts many online activities. Artwork is used as a medium to encourage people to get involved. Details can be found at tinyurl.com/saammonth.
