Convenience: that is what the world seems to be about these days. What can I get that’s cheap, fast and tastes good? The one place you can get that on campus is the cafeteria.
We indulge in the salty delights of French fries, the satisfaction of cheeseburgers, the sweet decadence of cheesecake and then wash it all down with the refreshing sigh of a soda.
Despite the fact that all this tastes good, it isn’t. What you eat can influence how you feel as well as how you look. Your body requires certain vitamins and nutrition that are not available in “The College Grill.”
Eating unhealthy lunches can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.
Not to mention that some of the foods you eat at the cafeteria contain fats that can lead to the narrowing of arteries due to plaque formations on artery walls.
Healthier choices such as fruit cups, salads, and sandwiches contain better nutrition which is good for normal brain performance as well as protein buildup.
There is nothing wrong with sitting down and having a burger once in a while. The cafeteria staff and our wonderful chefs try their best to provide the campus with a variety of food choices, but there is a limit to what you should consume. It can be hard to pack a lunch, but try.
Stores make wonderful little packs now of fruit and vegetables that are easy to grab and go. Make your lunches the night before and set a reminder for yourself that it is there.
Remember, there is nothing wrong with a now and then unhealthy meal, but everything is about moderation.
