Following the release of Django: Unchained, controversy about its provocative use of racial slurs, historical inaccuracies, and outlandish bloody violence has sparked both positive and negative reviews.
Almost immediately, audiences celebrated the film’s evenly paced, well-told story, electrifying performances, and excellent soundtrack.
Conversely, the lack of accuracy depicted by certain dates, locations, individuals, and a few scenes discussing sensitive topics such as slavery, racism, and rape, are causing numerous conflicts among critics and audiences alike.
Artists such as Spike Lee, Denzel Washington, and Samuel L. Jackson spoke their opinions on the subject with mixed feelings. Lee considers Django: Unchained to be deeply offensive. Jackson commended Tarantino’s courageousness while Denzel, although concerned about language involving race in previous Tarantino works, admitted that he’s a “… fine artist” in a Premiere Magazine interview.
When questioned about the film, individuals who previously viewed Django: Unchained or heard of it through acquaintances suggested quite bluntly, “…do not go see this movie,” due to the possibly offensive material.
It is a thrill ride of an event that will have the viewer guessing and laughing the entire way and is well worth the price of admission (for those who can endure it).
To anyone considering the picture: do not deprive yourself the opportunity of fully experiencing this great work; the hype is just that; hype.
The film continues to earn numerous accolades; Tarantino defended his art in an interview by Charlie Rose making this affirmation, “I have the right to tell the truth. I do not have the right to lie.”
