On Saturday June 8th the annual Sound to Narrows race took place for its 41st time in Tacoma, Washington. There were multiple events that took place on race day from a 20 yard “Diaper Dash” where children 3 and under competed to see who could finish the fastest, to the military 12K, and the 5K and 12K races where people competed for the best time. Along with the races there were 5K and 12K walks for people that wanted to show up and support the races but wouldn’t be able to run in them.
This year, the race had some special guests that presented the flag before the 12K race started, 4 members from the Boston Marathon. Racers Tim Campbell, Mickey Allen, Daryl Montgomery, and Justin Adams ran through the crowd before the start of the 12K holding a flag in honor of Boston Marathon, and there was a 22.6 second moment of silence that took place before the 12K in honor of the Boston Marathon as well.
The races began at 6:30 A.M. starting with the military 12K race and continued all the way until the award ceremony at 10:15 A.M. and the Diaper Dash at 10:30 A.M. The longest race, the 12K, proved to be quite a challenge to competitors who weren’t prepared for the long gradual inclines that were all throughout the race. The winner, of the 12K Phil Olsen, finished in an impressive 39:09. The winner of the 5K was Jeremiah Jensen who finished in an also impressive 17:29. Both of these races had competitors from all age groups and all of the racers were supportive of one another and made the races fun as well as competitive. If you want the healthy challenge of running a 5K or a 12K, or just want to enjoy a nice walk around Point Defiance park in Tacoma, the Sound to Narrows is a highly suggested. Get ready to participate in the Sound to Narrows next year.
