Colorado possibly lowering their education bar
Colorado possibly lowering their education bar Colorado Education Representatives are looking into a new bill that could help students graduate easier
July 7, 2026
Starting in 2021, the Board of Education came to an agreement that all Colorado students must meet a set of expectations in order to earn their high school diploma.
However, state officials have been contemplating the idea of allowing more breathing room for students, even going as far as to eliminate science and social studies.
If that were to happen, then the only subjects remaining would be math and English.
Another bit of good news for Colorado students is that while school district representatives want to stick with the minimum score requirements for ACT and SAT college entrance exams, they are willing to reduce or “cut scores” on four other subjects.
If approved, students in Colorado will have a much easier time graduating high school after the spring of this year. Now, if only Washington would embrace such an idea.
As good as an idea like this is, there are those that are worried such as president of Colorado Succeeds, Scott Laband.
Laband said, “when you raise the bar, kids raise their game.” Ladban added, “by lowering the bar, I think we are sending the wrong signal.”
Regardless, in all honesty, it has gotten somewhat ridiculous with the necessary tasks to simply be able to earn a degree.
Aside from the graduation requirements to walk, students also have to deal with passing the multiple subjects that are needed to graduate and move on to different colleges.
Having to pass science, math, english, social studies, and languages, it almost sounds like a daunting task to graduate.
Not to mention having to take the PSAT, Compass, SAT, ACT; all these tests sound so mundane.
While they should not make graduation a cake-walk, they should at least listen to the students and learn that all these tests do not always show what students are truly capable of.
