Travel back in time to the mysterious age when Greek gods ruled the world and no one was safe from the influences of love and war as Pierce presents Homer’s The Odyssey. This fast-paced, exciting adaptation of one of the great classics will be performed Nov. 6-7 and 13-14 at 7 p.m. with pre-show music beginning at 6:40.
This captivating classic story stars Odysseus, a warrior who is embarking on a voyage home after aiding in a long war against the city of Troy. Along the way, Odysseus and his men come face to face with monsters, a temptress, and even the shores of the underworld. Adapted by Gregory A. Falls and Kurt Beattie, this version of Homer’s classic is sure to captivate with its many facets of action, love, betrayal, life, and death.
Fred Metzger, theatre instructor, said he wasn’t very excited about The Odyssey until he saw it performed online by another theatre. “It was just a phenomenal vehicle for storytelling,” he said. “I thought it would just be a really fun idea.”
“This cast is phenomenal. They remind me of how I started,” Metzger said. “Their attitude is great and they’re connected. It’s been a joy to work with this group.”
Jazmine Herrington, one of the cast members said, “We’re a tight knit group and this is going to be a really exciting piece. We have this energy and cast dynamic where we’re able to play off of each other.”
Since the production is made up of only five cast members, Metzger says there is a lot going on at all times. “They’re really creative. Probably the best compliment that I can give them is that they don’t take themselves serious. They make you want to get up and play.”
Yishen Meng, another student actor, said, “This is a new experience for me because I have never taken part in a show before and it’s very fun.”
The enthusiasm of the cast is hard not to feed off of.
“I’m excited because it’s different than any other production I’ve been involved in. Everyone is at a different experience levels but we work really well together and have a good time,” Herrington said .
“The Odyssey is the ultimate story and Odysseus is the biggest hero of all time,” said Metzger. With such a dedicated and passionate cast, The Odyssey is sure to be a delight for audience members of all ages.
Tickets for The Odyssey are being offered online for the first time in Pierce’s history. Metzger describes the ease of purchasing tickets online as a “magical” experience. Pricing is $2 for students and $3 for general admission. Tickets can also be purchased at the door prior to the show.
