Blue Mouse Theatre on North and Proctor St. features sparkles, music, nudity and a sweet transvestite from transexual Transylvania in its showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
This 1975 film begins with a straight-laced newlywed couple who encounters car trouble. Looking for help and shelter from a rainstorm, they happen upon the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite from the galaxy of Transylvania. This sexual, circumstantial comedy has the audience rolling.
The fun at Blue Mouse starts before you even enter the theatre. As the line backs up, the anticipation builds and the characters from the show come out and mark the “Virgins” with a lipstick V. Virgins are members of the audience who have never seen the show before. All Virgins get the opportunity to participate in some games on stage before the the show gets started. They don’t make you play if you don’t want too, but it makes the show more fun if you do.
The inside of the theatre feels like a big party as cast members dance on the stage with members of the audience. Once everyone is seated, they go over the rules and explain some of the games. The show is not meant to be one where the audience quietly watches the movie in a respectful manner. The audience can buy party bags with things to throw during scenes of the movie. The audience gets to shout and yell and dance throughout the movie and interact with cast who humorously act out scenes while the movie plays. The show is not for the faint of heart or younger audiences, but it is perfect if you are a Rocky Horror fan or love interactive theater.
The show doubles as a fundraiser. On Oct. 24, Blue Mouse raised over $600 that goes towards rescuing Basset Hounds. They auctioned off different items like posters, private showings, t-shirts and lap dances from the cast.
The cast is friendly and accommodating without the snobby theatre feel. Upon entering, you can definitely sense the “come as you are” vibe. The performance was great and will keep you entertained all the way till the end. Brandon Ehremheim, playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter, performs the role so well that you would rather watch him as he runs around the theatre instead of the actual movie. When the movie ends, the audience gets the opportunity to take pictures with the cast.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Blue Mouse Theatre was tons of fun. The atmosphere was welcoming, the cast was friendly, and the show was entertaining. Being able to get up, dance shout and throw things was a nice change from the usual sitting hush-hush in a movie theater. The experience is well worth the seven dollar cost of admission.
Blue Mouse shows The Rocky Horror Picture Show every second and fourth Saturday of the month. The theater shows other films in the evenings on Thursdays through Sundays and hosts fun interactive shows throughout the year. Tickets are $7.
