Treva Adkins, Editor-in-Chief

Hello!

I held the Editor-in-Chief position in Student Media at Pierce College in Puyallup from September 2023 to June 2025.

During my time as Editor-in-Chief, and with the help of the SPLC, I advocated for our student press to finally get their full First Amendment rights through the the New Voices law.

Signed by Gov. Jay Inslee in 2018, the New Voices Act protects the press freedom of Washington’s public school and college student journalists and their advisers. The law says that student journalists cannot be censored by school officials, except in certain very narrow circumstances, and that advisers cannot be penalized for refusing to infringe on their students’ press rights.

New Voices is a student-powered nonpartisan grassroots movement of state-based activists who seek to protect student press freedom with state laws. These laws counteract the impact of the 1988 Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier Supreme Court decision, which dramatically changed the balance of student press rights. New Voices supporters include advocates in law, education, journalism and civics who want schools and colleges to be more welcoming places for student voices. Washington is only one of 14 states in the U.S. (as of 2025) that protect student press freedoms. In most other states college students lose some of their First Amendment rights when they walk through the campus gates.

You can read more about the New Voices law and why it’s so important, here: https://splc.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Washington-Know-Your-Rights-One-Pager.pdf

Our team rewrote the Student Publication code to include the long awaited New Voices law to allow for an unrestricted student voice to shine through our magazine, The Pinnacle.

In the spring of 2024 I earned my Associates degree in Art’s & Humanities at Pierce College, summa cum laude. I stayed at Pierce for another year to complete a degree in New Media, Digital & Graphic Design.

In 2026 I will be attending the University of Washington to earn my Bachelors degree. I plan to double major in Communications and Journalism with a minor in Digital Design.

I aim to secure a position as a Creative Director for a lifestyle magazine.

I love creating communication platforms with accessibility, flow, and of course, spectacular design.

Please feel free to contact me anytime!
