What you really need to endure higher education

July 7, 2026

There are countless columns on Pinterest about the necessities to bring to college, but most contain frivolous and inapplicable items. No one really needs three bags of M&Ms or two bags of Swedish Fish. Aside from the obvious essentials (pencils, erasers, pens, notebooks, etc…), here’s a list of what students really need on a college campus.
Granola bars. We go from classroom to classroom and it’s easy to forget to nourish our bodies. It’s also easy to grab the Hot Pockets or the Top Ramen out of the pantry at the end of the day out of pure exhaustion and hunger. By opting for healthier and more sustaining options throughout the day, students have more energy to wait for and maybe cook a more healthy meal.
Lint rollers. Whether or not you have a dog or cat or you just have a fuzzy jacket, lint rollers can be life saving.
Sewing kit. You never know when you’ll get caught on a door handle or in your car door and need a quick-fixer-upper.
Fidget Cube. A new little device that is perfect for those of us who suffer from restlessness and stir-craziness. This handheld cube has a different way of fidgeting on each side! It includes a light switch, a video game controller toggle, simple buttons and more. Instead of other activities that may take your attention away from the endless lecture that your professor is giving, this can help you keep your hands busy, but your mind focused.
Advil (or some sort of headache reliever). Some might be surprised what an all-nighter of studying can do to your brain. Or maybe you sit next to someone in class who doesn’t know when to stop talking.
Lip balm. Especially because of the location of the Fort Steilacoom campus, the changing of the seasons can be very tough. Making sure to keep our bodies moisturized and soft can be easily overlooked.
A big, soft, comfy blanket. With all the stress of homework and exams, it is easy to lose sight of relaxation. Make sure to have a method of relaxation, whether it is curling up on the couch with your big, soft, comfy blanket or sitting at a desk with your adult coloring book and colored pencils.
Band-Aids. This might throw some students back to elementary school, but paper cuts hurt.
There are many other items that can prove useful on college campuses and in college life. If you have more suggestions in the College Survival Kit, email us at [email protected] or check out our website at pcdpinnacle.com.
