April 5, a day that should affect many Seattleites, passed with almost no affect. The memorials of two deeply loved Seattle musicians passing. However, April 5 came and passed with almost no pause.
No one in the area seems to appreciate what an impact the early ‘90s Seattle music scene had on the future generations of music.
It seems as if the names of Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley have disappeared from the area.
Although there has been a small turn out for events such as the memorials, it is pretty much only die-hard fans that turn out for such events.
Staley’s name and identity have almost fully vanished. When students are asked about him, and if they are thinking about going to memorials, or remembering him, they reply with such phrases as “who is he?”
This is a disgrace to the music society. Although people may not like the band Alice in Chains, which is the band he was the singer of artists who forged the “grunge” music style shouldn’t be forgotten.
People like Mitch Holmquist and Tara Denton, who help to run the Cobain memorial in Viretta park, are helping to keep the dream alive, as well as the name of Kurt Cobain.
If all memory of these amazing artists are whipped out it will be hard to know where music has evolved from, and it is important to remember the dearly beloved.
