Move over Picasso, Pierce College students are coming to town. Pierce College’s Art Show is open to all students enrolled in an art course during the 2011- 2012 school year.
This year’s juror is Patrick Cavendish, the director of International Education who is an artist as well.
“This is Patrick’s retiring year, so we really wanted to honor him,” David Roholt, art professor said.
“And he is not an instructor so it will be non-biased,” Roholt added.
Some of the artists featured will be Desmond Burnett, Zhen Chen (Thomas), as well as Theresa Carr.
The Art Show will have everything from watercolors, sculptures, photography, drawing and mixed media works.
“I am excited,” Roholt said.
“There is a lot more photography this year than previous years. We have a new adjunct professor, Dan Meuse, who has encouraged students to apply,” Roholt added.
There are more than 200 applicants and the rewards include a Juror’s Choice Certificate, two Pierce College Fort Steilacoom art collection purchase awards worth $250 each, and numerous non-cash awards of merit.
This art show will be displaying some of the best and brightest of Pierce College’s Student artwork and students are excited.
“I have a friend whose artwork is in the show,” Michelle Nelson, student, said.
“I am excited to see her work on display; she has worked really hard on it,” Nelson added.
The art show will be going on until June 8, with an opening reception on Tuesday May 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The awards will be presented to those students chosen by the juror.
Last year’s winner is displayed out in the show case in the Olympic Building.
The winner before that, Sara Wisdom, has her artwork hanging in the college president’s office, which is something the winners can look forward to.
