Feminism is more than bra burning and women in the work force, but too often, when talked about, the role it plays in men’s lives is easily over looked.
Feminism isn’t just for women, it also benefits men’s lives in at least three ways: financial, emotional, and social expectations.
When a woman becomes employed, she provides more financial security to her family. By becoming a two income family or by completely supporting the family gives men the option to be a stay-at-home dad or pursue a career choice of his own and alleviates some of the pressure that might be felt otherwise.
Back in the fifties feminism was sporadic. ‘Mad Men’ portrays the sexism and double standards that were present at the time.
One of the drawbacks of the fifties was the interaction between fathers and children. The attitude of children being seen, but not heard is now an outdated perception, but for the time it was standard.
The feminist movement also allowed men to show their feeling and concern over their family. Before then, fathers interacting and being more hands on with the raising of children was rarely seen, leaving a majority of the nurturing to the mothers.
Another aspect of the emotional differences now experienced, is the interaction between husbands and wives.
While it was acceptable for a woman to have little to no say in major family decisions, it’s almost unheard of for a woman to not have an opinion by today’s standard.
In the past, wives needed to get permission from their husband before making changes to home life, but now a partnership tends to be the current role for husbands and wives. An equality of sorts between the sexes, defuses the tension and resentment women have felt throughout the years. Making their lives calmer and more at peace resulting in enlightened empathy for each other.
Where once a stay-at–home father may have been shunned, is now portrayed in TV shows as a kind and loving father and husband.
The social expectations are less restrictive of the male role. They no longer have to be the provider, but can be accepted as the nurturing parent.
While gender roles continue to be redefined in homes and work places its apparent feminism has helped shape society towards a better understanding of equality, and has improved men’s lives as well.
