Hidden in the corner of the Arts and Allied Health building on the Puyallup campus, there is a room that from the outside looks like all the others. However, within that room there is a music studio with a variety of equipment for students to use. As you walk into this hidden gem on campus, you are greeted by someone by the name of Ryan Mukai, the Recording Engineer at Pierce College. He asks you to come in and shows you around with hospitality.
Pierce’s music studio is open to all students, whether you have had previous experience producing music, or not. Students are also allowed to come in and shadow Ryan to get familiar with the process of recording and producing. Whether recording a podcast, music for a film or a song, the music studio has got you covered. Ryan will set up all of the microphones and inputs so when students come in, they can focus on performing.
The equipment that students can use ranges from guitars, drum kits, keyboards, pianos, a mixing board with the program Pro Tools and a variety of microphones. “We have a mic collection of probably about 30 mics, and we have a max input of 16. So, we can record a maximum of 16 microphones at the same time. So, we can get a full band in here.”
Ryan was also once a student at Pierce. “I knew I liked music, and I saw that they had an audio production class here, and I took it.” He eventually was hired and was able to peruse his dream job of working in a recording studio.
“I tell everybody when they ask me that this has been the best job, best job I’ve ever had.”
