This winter in the state of Washington, legalization of marijuana passed into enactment. Because weed is now about as legal as alcohol, many students at Pierce have taken up this extracurricular activity.
Most students at Pierce College have not been made aware of the campuses rules pertaining to having weed on campus. D’Marie Grimes said he didn’t know anything about pierce smoking policy.
Students at Pierce should be made aware that there are strict policies on the use of marijuana on campus.
When asked about his views on campus policy D’Marie said, “If it was a high school I could understand a strict punishment, but I would think since everyone here is an adult they should be able to do whatever they want as long as they are law-abiding citizens.”
D’Marie also said he has never seen anyone get in trouble for weed, or even checked to see if they were smoking it.
Byron Fritz, a security guard at pierce, explains, “Even though the state allows it, the feds still recognize it as an illegal drug.”
Because Pierce College is supported by federal funds, students at pierce are not allowed to smoke or even carry weed on the school premises.
Byron explains, “even if they have their green card, they can still get in trouble for possession on campus. It is a federal crime.”
Although Pierce’s enforcement officers still do not have a specific procedure to take care of illicit drug use or possession on campus, Byron said if security guards came across it, they would “tell them to put it out and get rid of it.”
Byron also explained that the police would be called if there were need for extra enforcement.
