The art of theater takes on a life of its own at the college, producing such plays as Return to the Forbidden Planet.
The drama department had taken the concept of melding Shakespeare’s the tempest, oldies music and an old sci-fi film the forbidden planet.
The troupe that preformed the sold out play Return to the Forbidden Planet boasted experience from some members being actors at the local Lakewood Playhouse to students walking on campus with virtually no history in drama. Even with a gap in their skills at the start of the quarter, the end result seemed to pack the auditorium every night.
The actors had to learn the choreography lyrics; even demanding two young women to act as a single, two-headed body for the entire production. The stage goes from a still deck, to a blur of space suits, even to dancing to the smash hit ‘great balls of fire’.
Both the director of the play and a majority of the actors on stage encourage anyone even remotely curious about acting and drama to take a shot. There are no expectations in the outset and everyone acts together to improve for improvement’s sake and to put on a fun show for everyone. Be it the leading role or the set painter, everyone acted enthusiastically and genuinely happy with their work.
By the end of the production everyone seemed to be beaming with their performance, the chairs were all full, standing ovations around and some revenue for the school. The students are proud of their work, and said the director let everyone have their say and while the summer days won’t be filled with plays and rehearsals, its encouraged that if anyone is interested that they should prepare well for fall.
