Editorial: Godzilla has run out of things to destroy

When people think Godzilla, they think of the iconic monster that destroyed Tokyo in the 1954 original. What most people don’t know is that there are now 29 Godzilla movies. This may seem like a small number, but consider the 60 years it’s existed. Include all the games and cartoons that have come out and it just becomes too much.

Godzilla has fought everything. From a sea monster that looks like H.P. Lovecraft’s dreams, to Space-Godzilla, to an ancient monster bent on beating the reptile. This monster has fought so many things, that Hollywood has started recycling ideas.

Not to mention, sixteen games star Godzilla, on almost every console from the GameBoy Advanced to the PC. Along with the usual beat-em-ups, there is also a Godzilla trading card game.

It just becomes superfluous, especially with the release of another film. Godzilla is the icon of monster movies, but Hollywood has not done portrayed him the best they could. The 1998 Godzilla movie makes the reptilian monster a mutated iguana. Godzilla doesn’t even breathe fire in the film.

With Hollywood willing to do anything to make a buck, including rebranding an already iconic franchise, it makes one wonder what they might do to it in the 2014 version. With horrible remakes like Clash of the Titans, and Wicker Man, their portrayal of Godzilla does not bode well.

Godzilla hasn’t been around this long for nothing. A great job so far has been done to maintain the integrity of the franchise. And while it is also easy to try and “improve” the franchise by making it high tech and modern, all the hype for this 2014 version makes one wonder if it will meet expectations.
