There are a multitude of great places to go during the summer in the Northwest. Washington has mountains, beaches, rain forests, and cities, all within driving distance of each other and all with their own sights to see. However, gas is expensive, and there are plenty of places in Pierce County just as beautiful.
One such location is Pioneer Park, located nearby in Steilacoom. One only has to follow Main St. to its end to find the grassy plot overlooking Puget Sound. Though much smaller than the more familiar Ft. Steilacoom park, it still has plenty of personality.
Starting June 11 and occurring each following Wednesday, the Steilacoom Farmers market and the annual concert in the park series will begin. The market runs from 3 to 7 p.m. just one block up from Pioneer Park. It includes numerous vendors that sell items ranging from bread to flowers to vegetables to honey. As the market closes up, the Concerts begin in the park, with a different performance and musical style each week.
When the park isn’t being used for events, it makes a great place to relax and sunbathe. A gentle slope towards the water means that the view is easy to see even lying down. Ferries travel regularly between Steilacoom and the islands, providing a picturesque scene.
Behind the park is the historic E. R. Rogers building and, though it’s now owned by a legal firm and can no longer be toured, is still an interesting sight.
Of course, surrounding Pioneer Park is the town of Steilacoom. Though it may be small, the town has several parks, restaurants, and places to see. The Bair Drugstore, which has been converted into a restaurant, is another historical landmark worth checking out.
All in all, Pioneer Park and Steilacoom offer plenty in the way of entertainment and summertime fun.
