‘Shake it off’ shows off Taylor Swift’s new style
July 7, 2026
Let’s talk Taylor Swift. The twenty four year old just blew up social media with her new song “Shake It Off”. The catchy and clever, parody-like song sports Taylor trying every type of dance to “Shake” off her ex’s and “haters”. The song is an obvious response to the constant ragging on her dating life.
The video came with the announcement of a new album, called 1989. The video, with an absolutely cringe worthy dose of awkwardness, casts Taylor as a terrible dancer. She tries everything from ballet to twerking, and fails, sending her usual message- she’s just like us.
Or that’s what we’re supposed to think, at least. Between the purposefully bad dancing, and the awkwardly good dancing, the viewers are left wondering what just happened.
Well, a few things happened. Swift definitely can’t classify her new single as country music. Her new album, 1989, is said to be entirely pop style. She pairs her new sound with new style. Remember the drama after the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, when everyone thought she chopped off her long blonde tresses? Well she did it again. The now 24 year old has a new, big girl hair style to go with her new bubblegum pop vibe. T swizzle is definitely distancing herself from her the more childish “You Belong With Me” style.
The video for “Shake It Off” tiptoes wisely between parody and real song. We’re left wondering if Swift means it as a joke or not. She even does some twerking-like moves with fake shock on her face.
But the new song’s chorus says it all. “Players gunna play play play and the haters gunna hate hate hate- But baby I’m just gunna shake shake shake, shake it off.”
What do you think, is Swift’s new style worthy of this much attention? Or should we be the ones shaking off Taylor?
