Liam Neeson Supports Gun Control

Academy Award nominee actor Liam Neeson, famous for films such as “Schindler’s List,” “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” and the “Taken” franchise has voiced his opinion about gun control.

While promoting his newest film, “Taken 3,” in Dubai during an interview with “Gulf News,” Neeson spoke out about the topic of gun control.  “There’s too many fucking guns out there. Especially in America” Neeson told “Gulf News.”

“I think the population is, like, 320 million? There’s over 300 million guns. Privately owned, in America. I think it’s a fucking disgrace. Every week now we’re picking up a newspaper and seeing, ‘Yet another few kids have been killed in schools.’”

However, Neeson clarified that the issue with guns had nothing to do with violent Hollywood films. “I grew up watching cowboy movies, loved doing that [gun gesture] with my fingers, ‘Bang, bang, you’re dead!’ I didn’t end up a killer.” Neeson added, “A character like Bryan Mills going out with guns and taking revenge: it’s fantasy.”

While Neeson may have spoken with good intentions, the “Para-Ordnance USA” (PARA USA) did not take kindly to Neeson’s pro-gun control comments. PARA USA is a gun company that provided the weapons for “Taken 3” as well as other Hollywood films.

In response to Neeson’s comments, PARA USA posted a status on their Facebook page that was viewed by millions as well as the “Washington Times.”

The comment read, “PARA USA regrets its decision to provide firearms for use in the film…While the film itself is entertaining, comments made by its Irish-born star during press junkets reflect a cultural and factual ignorance that undermines support of the Second Amendment and American liberties.”

The PARA USA then went a step further and added, “We will no longer provide firearms for use in films starring Liam Neeson and ask that our friends and partners in Hollywood refrain from associating our brand and products with his projects. Further, we encourage our partners and friends in the firearms industry to do the same.”

While the backlash against Neeson was made public, Neeson has not responded and there is no word as to whether or not other the boycott has spread against supporting Neeson’s films.

Apparently, this is not the first time that the actor has spoken for pro-gun control. In September of 2014, he reportedly criticized the National Rifle Association (NRA) for their comments about the 2012 shooting in Newton, Connecticut.

The NRA responded by posting a comment on Facebook that said, “Another Hollywood hypocrite happy to make tens of millions on screen with a gun in his hands, but then advocates for disarming normal folks.”

Neeson has been proactive in promoting gun control by working with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to fight violence against children. He often cites his 2008 action thriller “Taken” as inspiration.

Neeson is not the only celebrity that has spoken for pro-gun control. Other celebs such as Matt Damon, Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, Amy Poehler, and even George Clooney have voiced their support for gun control. More recently, award winning actor Sean Penn gave away his 65 guns for them to be melted down and made into a sculpture. Penn was convinced by his girlfriend, fellow actress Charlize Theron who had a tragic history with guns.

With gun control being debated around the world and gun violence on the rise with school shootings, it is unclear whether or not the world can come to agree on the decision of how to conduct gun control.
