Monday June 5, 2012, an audience gathered in the theater room at noon to watch and support the beautiful ladies of the first Miss Pierce Pageant.
The first portion of the competition had the ladies dancing, singing, and telling jokes along with poems for their talent.
First contestant Vanessa Chandler preformed an in- terpretive dance, riling up the audience for the rest of the total of 11 talents.
After Chandler both Emma Hoyt and Osceola Brown recited poetry as their talent before the pag- eant winner Miriam Wanjiru Ngige preformed her captivating African dance and spoken word.
Margaret Moore and Brandi Felice both sang songs when Courtney Simon switched it up with a Facebook related stand-up comedy routine.
Sharon Ramella recited a poem and then Olesia Finklea sung and danced for her talent number. The 10th contestant Lisa Baugh sang “Amazing Grace” and the final contestant danced in a Mary J. Blige number.
After the talent portions, the ladies all took their walks in their evening gowns in front of the cheering audience.
The gowns varied from being long, short, colorful and not. But the gown that stood out was coincidently on the winner Ngige. She wore a traditional African gown completed with a head wrap. Respect of her African culture that the winner exhumed touched the audience members.
The dreaded question part of the pageant caused the women to think hard and long about the answers. The questions were: Who or what inspires you the most? What is the role of today’s women? What is beauty according to you? Do you consider yourself to be a giver or a taker and why? If you have to choose between beauty and intelligence what would you choose? If you can change one thing about the world what would it be?
The answers pleasantly surprised the audience.
In response to what is the role of today’s women Ramella even explained how the women shouldn’t be constricted and limited to be held in a “role”.
“This experience is a great opportunity for me to learn that maybe you have more in common with the ladies than just the pageant then you though you did before. And I think that something you can take anywhere in your life and in any situation,” Ngige, Pageant winner, said.
The prize basket had a $100 gift card to Sephora, along with tickets for two to go indoor skydiving along with other numerous prizes that the judges couldn’t recall.
